Things You Should Not Do With Plastic Anymore

Why reduce the use of plastic as possible in everyday life?

– The oil extraction is extremely polluting;

– The plastic took ages to diminish;

– Most of the time it is not recyclable;

– When it is recyclable (in most regions, only plastic bottles and flasks), it is only a few times, unlike glass or steel, recyclable at infinite ;

– Because its incineration or land-filling as waste pollutes enormously;

– Honestly, plastic is much less aesthetic than wood, stainless steel, fabric, glass, etc!

1- Never Pour Your Hot Tea or Coffee (Or Cook Your Food) Into a Plastic Container

In contact with a portion of very hot food or drink, the potentially toxic additives in the plastic container may migrate to it!

So Limit These Risks:

Choose a container or bottle (for your water, tea or coffee) whose interior is stainless steel.

Avoid disposable coffee cups, even cardboard cups (because the inside cover is with a plastic film);

Do not heat food in the microwave in a plastic container (even if it marked a” microwavable”).

Avoid as much as possible the food to be cooked in, such as rice in plastic bags to be placed in boiling water.

Replace little by little your plastic kitchen utensils (spatula, colander, cutlery, cups, bowls, plates …) by their equivalents in stainless steel (healthy and very resistant), wood, glass or ceramic.

2- Don’t Make Plastic Your Favorite Material for Children:

Babies and young children are more vulnerable to these toxic plastic additives than adults. Plastic dishes (plates, cutlery, baby bottles, water bottles …), so popular with parents because of the impact resistant and lightweight, is to be limited to the maximum!

3- Don’t Buy unlimited plastic “because it’s recyclable”

It is necessary to collect the waste door-to-door, to transport them in sorting center, to sort them, to wash them, to transport them in recycling center (often at the other end of the world!), To reach very high temperatures to melt them (for plastic and glass), mold them into balls, transport them, …

In short, the best waste is the one that has never been produced!

For unavoidable waste, recycling remains very practical and desirable. But ideally and when you can, it’s best not to produce waste at all, rather than produce recyclables.

4- Discard All Your Plastic Waste In The Recycling Bin:

Soft, hard, transparent, opaque, there are many types of plastics. Unfortunately, they are today very few are recyclable. Only a percentage of plastic bottles are recyclable in all municipalities. Some countries also accept others (such as soft plastics: bags, films, bags, …), but they are very rare for now (it will evolve in the coming years).

Technically, there is a method to recycle each type of plastic. But the vast majority of cities are not equipped with these machines. These are therefore not accepted in recycling.

5- Avoid buying your Fatty Foods (oils, butter, etc) in Plastic Containers:

Did you know that some plastic additives are “fat-soluble”, that is, they migrate particularly easily in fatty foods? So avoid as much as possible the fatty foods sold and stored in plastic packaging. Always prefer, for example, oils in glass bottles.

6- Buy and Store All Your Food Without Plastic:

Prolonged contact with plastic increases the risk of migration of its additives to your food. Without falling into the extreme and where possible, buy and store your food without it. For example, buy your dry foods in bulk shelves (cereals, nuts, biscuits, beans, rice, etc.), then pour them into glass jars once at home. You can get your jars of jam (or others) or buy pretty jars used.

7- You Don’t Spread The Plastic On Skin:

You have read correctly: without knowing it, we apply daily plastic derivatives on your skin. Industrial cosmetics, and particularly moisturizers, are often composed of mineral oils (extracted from petroleum) and other products (such as PEG).

Choose moisturizing creams that are organic (because mineral oils, plastic derivatives, and many other products with a high impact on the environment and health are not good).

8- Don’t Think that Buying Plastic Is Cheaper:

Kitchen utensils, furniture, dishes, and all other materials. The prices of this material are often lower. But beware, it is fragile and ages badly, it breaks or becomes dangerous to health and must be discarded and replaced.

So-called “biosourced” plastics (or called by the misleading name “bioplastic”) or so-called biodegradable are not as fantastic as is often thought.

Bio-based plastics are not made from oil but from vegetable material. But be careful, this does not mean that they don’t have additives just as dangerous as those of conventional plastics! Moreover, bottles and other so-called “biobased” packaging is often only partially (a bottle advertisement is as “vegetable” may actually consist of only 20%). So beware of deceptive marketing.

So-called “biodegradable” are not necessarily compostable. It does not mean that they can be thrown into the wild! Again, biodegradable plastic is not necessarily healthy or safe.
