Plastic Materials Almost Everywhere:
We observe the plastic materials almost everywhere. But it is only a small fraction of what we see. Since the origin of modern plastic above 8 billion tons have been generated by the manufacturers. Plastic is mostly thrown away after the utilization and it remains in the landfills and oceans without speedy deterioration. According to the scientists, these tiny plastic pieces are called “Microplastics” of less than 5 mm size and these are everywhere. Modern day researchers are studying the presence of these tiny plastic pieces in the environment. Soil and water are the two major points of attention for the scientists.
Chelsea Believes that Studying how Plastic Gets in These Organisms is Important for us:
Chelsea Rochman works at the University of Toronto as an ecologist and she is trying to see how these tiny plastic particles get into the soil, sea, beer, fish and other organisms. As a matter of fact, it is a mystery for her as well as for the rest of the researchers. She is now working on the food chains including the larvae, fish, and other organisms eating the fish. Chelsea believes that studying how plastic gets in these organisms is important for us as we consume seafood on daily basis and it brings plastic in our bodies. Microplastics Present in the Deep Soils as well as Waters:
As an ecologist, Chelsea was worried about the food chains present in the oceans. It is easy to understand that these tiny particles are included in the food chains being consumed by the organisms. According to her, it is hard to complete the studies on this aspect. She starts the day in Ontario where she visits different parks, lakes and public places to see the plastic particles in soil and water. The lake is the most interesting place in this matter as it hides too much.
Recently, they visited the seashore where they investigated the presence of tiny plastic pieces in the water and soil. It was surprising to see that microplastics were present in the deep soils as well as waters. They decided to dig the soil in order to see the debris. It was shocking to see the plastic bottles, caps, covers, and bags. This was insane.

Focus on the Organisms in the Water:
This part completed compelled them to focus on the organisms in the water. It was important to see whether they are consuming plastic or not. They captured around 500 different organisms from the lake as well as nearby sea. The results were similar as they discovered several types of plastic items from the stomach of these animals. In order to see how these organisms consume these microplastics, they reared fish larvae and provided microplastics including beads, ribbons, shopping bag pieces and others. The samples were sent to a toxicology lab for the stomach and tissue analysis.
Reports confirmed that fish larvae feeding on these pieces gathered a significant amount of plastic in the body. This was a horrible report showing what we have done to our environment. This experiment was not about the toxicology analysis. They also studied the impacts of plastic feeding on the fish larvae. Several hundred died during the experiment. Those who survived were unable to maintain the fitness cost. There was a considerable difference between healthy and tested fish larvae.
What to Do In This Situation?
The experiments or studies done by the Chelsea are not about the health of fishes. She was interested to see the huge impacts of plastic on the environment as well as food chains. In a recently published study, a team of scientists claimed that microplastics are getting a place in the cell or tissues of animals. This means that they are making a genetic pathway to get a new host. This is why Chelsea decided to see the effects on the food chain as humans also consume fishes and other sea animals feeding on this garbage.
The only way to avoid the expected dangers is care. It is necessary to be nature-friendly. It is not necessary to use plastic everywhere. We commonly use plastic shopping bags, bottles, plates and others. These things can be avoided with the help of degradable products. Plastic deteriorates with very slow speed. This may take several generations of humans. It is evident that plastic usually takes hundreds of years to decompose.

Plastic is not only a source of BPA and PCB but it also spread chemicals. Toxicological studies performed by several institutes. According to the ecologists and environment experts, plastic is a dangerous element and it is getting status of “Trojan Horse” for the living community.
Chelsea believes that humans are the biggest source of contamination. We continuously dump plastics into landfills and oceans. We are going to make things worse. There is a need to admit the things in order to see our response. It is directly related to our living matters in this world. It is very important to protect the environment if we want to give a safer and cooler place to upcoming generations. Chelsea has discovered several ways to make things better.
