Is walking an exercise?
Everyone is aware of the importance of physical activity or exercise. The health benefits of being active are hard to ignore. It can have an immediate and long-term impact on your health. Regular exercise can improve your quality of life, make you feel better – with more energy, a better mood, feel more relaxed, sleep better, and likely even live longer.
But like most of us, you are busy, have an 8-hour desk job, and going to the gym is not your cup of tea. The good thing is, it’s never too late to start. You can start slowly, and find ways to fit more physical activity into your life. You can start from small changes made throughout your day by walking. For example, instead of using the lift why not take the stairs, you can go for a walk during your lunch break, or if you live close enough take a short walk to work.
Here are the benefits of walking:
Walking improves heart health. It increases your heart rate which strengthens your heart and increases blood circulation through your body bringing more nutrients and oxygen to your organs.
Reduction in health risks of conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, joint, and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes.
Weight loss and improved body composition. Reduce body fat, stronger bones, and improve balance. It also increases muscle strength and endurance. The more you walk and the quicker your pace, the more calories you’ll burn.
Walking Can Boost Your Mental Health. It does not only boost our mood but also lowers our stress levels because walking also releases endorphins which can aid in reducing depression, anxiety, and even insomnia.
Improves digestion. Walking reduces bloating, constipation, and provides relaxation from any other stomach-related problems.
It can boost creativity and critical thinking. Walking may help clear your head and open up a free flow of ideas and come up with solutions to a problem.
When it comes to exercise, going for a walk doesn’t come on top of the list. It is one of the most underrated forms of exercise unlike yoga, weight training, or boxing which get a lot more attention. Fortunately, walking for exercise can give you a lot of the same benefits as grueling workouts. Try walking for at least 30 minutes as briskly as you can. Even the smallest loop in your neighborhood can have an immense effect on your health and well-being. So no more excuses, all you need is some appropriate walking shoes, a bottle of water for rehydration and you are all set to make it part of your daily routine for a happier and healthier you.
