The war on plastic is launched. If you use a reusable water bottle instead of single-use water bottles it is therefore to your credit. Be careful to clean it well, otherwise beware of bacteria!

Last year the European Union has announced that it wants to ban 10 plastic objects for single use. These include plastic cups and plates. It must be said that for the moment, 46 billion single-use plastic bottles are consumed each year in the EU according to the study.

However, progress is on the way. Since the entry into force of restrictive legislation on plastic bags, almost three in four Europeans say they have reduced their consumption, according to the Euro-barometer. Among them, the efforts made to the replacement of their single-use bottles with a reusable water bottle. A much more ecological gesture, which is also good for the budget “shopping” of the week; however, it requires to take some precautions for hygiene. Indeed, if you do not regularly clean your reusable water bottle, you may accumulate rather unpleasant bacteria.

Bacteria Galore:

Remember, several months ago, a study by the fitness brand Treadmill Review had tested a dozen reusable sports bottles that are unclean for a week. The study arrived at a disastrous result and found that about 300 000 units of bacteria per square centimeter could be found inside.

Germs caused by a lack of washing (filling without washing the bottles, assuming that the water will make them clean). It may also due to poor hygiene habits such as not washing your hands after going to the bathroom or even taking your bottle to the bathroom with you, “says Dr. Andrew Singer, senior scientist at the Center for Ecology and Hydrology, to the English Huff-Post.

“When you flush, toilet water becomes volatile and a fraction of the droplets of water can flow on and into your water bottle,” he told.

Clean Your Reusable Water Bottle Regularly:

You will understand, although you are using a reusable water bottle, it does not keep clean alone. It is therefore imperative to clean it every day, as you would with your cup of coffee or bowl of soup. Note that in soft drinks; the proliferation of bacteria tends to be faster than in the water, so clean your reusable water bottle even more deeply if you drink fruit juice.

For starters, never leave a bottle with liquid inside stagnant, it could lead to mold and unpleasant odors and make cleaning even more complicated.

Use Bottle Brush to Hygiene Reusable Water Bottle:

In everyday life, it is important to clean it every day; hot water can suffice, as long as it reaches 71° C. If not, let it soak in water with soap or bicarbonate and rinse thoroughly. If residues remain in the case of drinks other than water, clean the corners of the bottle with a bottle brush.

Once in a month, fill your reusable water bottle with ½ tsp white vinegar and ½ tsp hot soapy water. Leave on during the night. Rub and rinse thoroughly with clear water in the morning. Do the same with all accessories such as the cap, the most important part to clean.
