Every day we make choices that affect the environment. From the clothes we wear to the food we eat and how we travel to work, every decision we make impacts the planet. When people feel stressed or out of touch, most of us go for walks and long for a much-needed rest or a vacation. We search for forests, parks, beaches, and country roads to feel more at peace connected to nature. With that, it’s no surprise that human well-being and how we live are intrinsically connected to the environment’s health.

Today, many of us use energy and create waste at a rate that isn’t sustainable. People need more energy and materials than ever before. Our planet can only provide so many resources before they begin to deplete. This results in pollution and climate change, harming ourselves, the environment, and its wildlife. For this reason, we should minimize the things we do that harm the earth’s biodiverse ecosystems. Environmental sustainability can be achieved by individuals and by corporations and government bodies. As individuals, we can take small but effective steps toward a more sustainable lifestyle, you can reduce your carbon footprint and help to tackle these issues. We must prevent further damage. It is our responsibility to ensure that our future generations, will have healthy places to live.

How to live a more sustainable lifestyle?

Here are the simple but amazing ways that you can do to have a sustainable environment:

Save energy

Energy conservation is one of the most important things you can do to reduce carbon emissions. You can start by changing all incandescent and CFL bulbs for LEDs. Always switch off standby appliances, turn your heating down, and wash your clothes full load and hang them to dry instead of using a drier.

Recycle and reuse

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” is as important today as when the phrase first originated. These help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away. Using recycled materials to make new products reduces the need for raw materials. This avoids greenhouse gas emissions that would result from extracting or mining raw materials.

Save water

For plants, animals, humans, and every living organism, water equals life. Without water, there is no life.  Less water going down the drain means more water available in the lakes, rivers and streams that we use for recreation and wildlife uses to survive.

Cut down plastic waste

Giving it up isn’t as difficult as you might think – bring a canvas bag with you when you go shopping and stop buying bottled water. Not only does the manufacturing and transportation of plastic water bottles lead to significant fossil fuel emissions, but most plastic water bottles are not recyclable and do not biodegrade. Avoiding them is one of the easiest things you can do to reduce the amount of plastic in your life.

Reducing the use of paper saves trees and conserves energy used in converting those trees into paper and in transporting paper products. You can start by enrolling in electronic billing, you’ll be able to get your bill via email and pay online.

Don’t waste food and compost

This isn’t just a huge waste of food and money, composting helps create a natural fertilizer and keep your garden green, it’ll also reduce the amount of waste going to landfills, as it won’t break down anaerobically, and there will not be a build-up of methane gas.

Grow your own produce

By growing your own garden, you are the one to decide what goes on your plants and into your soil, allowing you to reduce the number of harmful chemicals polluting our environment and waterways.

Use eco-friendly cleaning products

Green cleaning products can help lessen both water and air pollution, and effectively fight climate change and ozone depletion.

Choose your personal care wisely

When it comes to personal hygiene there are several things you need to be careful to avoid for a truly eco-friendly lifestyle. The most damaging of these is microbeads, which are small bits of solid plastic that aren’t biodegradable and make their way into watercourses and ultimately end up damaging the environment by entering the food chain. Make sure that your body wash, toothpaste, face scrub, and other products do not contain these beads.

Buy less, buy better

We know not buying anything isn’t possible, but thinking carefully about the quality and provenance of everything you’re buying really does make a difference.

It’s vital to recognize the value of nature to our society and economy and support sustainable management and investment in nature. Sustainable living won’t be easy but it is certainly possible. It is a long-term lifestyle change and a journey.  It doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying the small, daily pleasures ever again. You won’t get it right every day, you’ll slip up, you’ll forget, you’ll be too tired to care but don’t give up. No one gets it right every time. Every decision you make, and every product you buy can be an ethical decision. So every day that is millions of chances to make a more sustainable choice. We don’t need to be perfect, we just need to try more, do more, change more, and inspire others to do the same. Be patient with yourself, and remember that a little bit adds up over time.
